Mirrors (2019)
This piece is for Soprano and Piano and features text from the poem "January 9, 2019" by The Ginger Buddha.
Snow: For String Quartet (2019)
The seasonal shifts are very prominent in Western New York, and winter feels like one of the longest. This is the first movement of a larger work that is in progress and highlights the temperamental snow storms of winter in the Great Lakes.
Shadows (2019)
This piece explores the jumpy interactions between these instruments, like one is perhaps jumping at shadows. I had the opportunity to write a piece to be read by the Marimba and Bass Clarinet duo, Transient Canvas and here it is. The sound of the instrumental duo immediately reminded me of the early 1970s album Bitches Brew by Miles Davis which inspired the groove.
Dreams and Nightmares (2020)
I created this sort of passion project in Audacity during the beginning of the pandemic when I was stuck inside, which I promptly posted to soundcloud under the alias "Orange Astra" . Dreams and Nightmares is a piece of fixed media in four movements inspired by the dreams, nightmares and endless thoughts that filled my bedroom during the early pandemic.
Memories (2021)
I wrote this piece in the Fall of 2020 for 12 piece jazz band. The original version contains flute and piano but due to limitations we could not include the piano part for this recording, and I played the flute part on the violin. I ended up really liking the sound anyway, and the unusual instrumentation helps make the piece distinct. The recording and mixing was done at SUNY Fredonia with Nick Myers.
Days Passing By (2021)
In this piece I wanted to explore the contrast between a live electric guitar against pre-recorded guitar lines as they work together in counterpoint. To create a counterpoint pattern out of smaller samples without overt repetition, I took a 24 beat interval and broke it down into five separate meters that all lined up at the 24th beat, but along the way they operated against each other to form the counterpoint. The opening melody repeats every eight beats and so it plays three times before the next line enters, this one repeating every three beats for a total of eight times and so on. The live guitar acts somewhat freely over the top of these woven patterns, either repeating a pattern of five beats to stay apart from the rest or freely improvising over the top of the pre-recorded texture. As there are 24 hours in a day, the title refers to the passing of days especially during a time of routine where each day seems to consist of the same events but slightly different.
Water Song (2021)
Canadaway Creek in Western New York has always been personal favorite spot of mine to enjoy nature throughout the seasons and sit by the water. This piece is inspired by the great experiences I had by that creek and how they will always be a part of myself.
